Day 4 – Himejo Castle and Kyoto

We took the Shinkansen (bullet train) to  our next destination.  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinkansen

The one we took is the fastest in their fleet going speeds up to 200 miles per hour.  We speed tested our ride and it averaged around 160 mph.  They have themed trains; we saw Disney, Hello Kitty, and an anime one called One Piece.

Himeji Castle was built in the 1400s and is enormous with 6 stories and moats all around not just the castle but throughout the town.  It has been designated World Heritage Site.

After the castle we took the bullet train to Kyoto and checked in to our hotel.

We decided on a Sushi train restaurant for dinner and had the most amazing sushi that I hadn’t had before (fatty tuna and fatty salmon) as well as sake.  I haven’t liked sake before because in the states there is little choice in what you get.  Sake is rice wine and it comes in an entire range of dry to sweet.  One place we went to had 40 different kinds.  I absolutely love a semisweet!

Our day ended with the usual savage foot pain and 15,500 steps.

  1. These are spectacular photos of amazing places!
It seems like there are not many tourists at some of these places. It sounds like you’re having the perfect vacation.

    1. The trains blow your hair back when they pass on the station platform. I will be putting a video up that took from my seat.
